ARTIST: ALP
TITLE: Out and about with Alp
LABEL: SOLEILMOON |

|
| DESCRIPTION: Out and about with Alp is Roger Horberry's second album. It's a continuation of his single-minded obsession with the tiny sounds of everyday life in Amsterdam. His debut solo CD, At Home With Alp (Soleilmoon, 1999), focused on the world of interiors. This release documents and reinterprets the secret sounds of the streets, canals and parks of Amsterdam city centre.
The artist says it best: "Walking around the city, especially at night, I was struck by just how quiet Amsterdam is compared to London. I could actually hear all the stuff that is usually buried in the background sonic blur. Each tiny sound, whether it was a rickety bike passing on a cobbled street, a busker's steel drum or a workman's blowtorch, had space to breathe without being crowded or overwhelmed by its neighbours. Instead of being forced to compete for attention, each sound stood out like a splash of brilliant colour on a white background. I wondered if all this raw material could be made into something amazing; even the most insignificant sound carries within it the potential to be beautiful."
The answer to his question is in your hands now, and we’re sure you’ll love the results. Roger Horberry was a long-time member of the influential group O Yuki Conjugate. His background in atmospheric ambient music is much in evidence in this new work, along with numerous elements of minimalism and musique concrete. Out and about with Alp was created entirely from recordings he made in Amsterdam. He calls it "the secret sounds of Amsterdam, a neglected data stream revealing another side of the city". Come visit the hidden worlds he’s found.
