ARTIST: ALP
TITLE: Out and about with Alp
LABEL: SOLEILMOON |

|
| DESCRIPTION: Out and about with Alp is Roger Horberry's second album. It's a continuation of his single-minded obsession with the tiny sounds of everyday life in Amsterdam. His debut solo CD, At Home With Alp (Soleilmoon, 1999), focused on the world of interiors. This release documents and reinterprets the secret sounds of the streets, canals and parks of Amsterdam city centre.
The artist says it best: "Walking around the city, especially at night, I was struck by just how quiet Amsterdam is compared to London. I could actually hear all the stuff that is usually buried in the background sonic blur. Each tiny sound, whether it was a rickety bike passing on a cobbled street, a busker's steel drum or a workman's blowtorch, had space to breathe without being crowded or overwhelmed by its neighbours. Instead of being forced to compete for attention, each sound stood out like a splash of brilliant colour on a white background. I wondered if all this raw material could be made into something amazing; even the most insignificant sound carries within it the potential to be beautiful."
The answer to his question is in your hands now, and we’re sure you’ll love the results. Roger Horberry was a long-time member of the influential group O Yuki Conjugate. His background in atmospheric ambient music is much in evidence in this new work, along with numerous elements of minimalism and musique concrete. Out and about with Alp was created entirely from recordings he made in Amsterdam. He calls it "the secret sounds of Amsterdam, a neglected data stream revealing another side of the city". Come visit the hidden worlds he’s found.

ARTIST: ANT-ZEN VINYL GRAB BAG
TITLE: Ant-Zen vinyl records Grab Bag
LABEL: ANT-ZEN |
|
| DESCRIPTION: When we moved out of the old Soleilmoon lounge there were a lot of overstock CDs and LPs from one of our favorite labels Ant-Zen. The label didn't want them back, so we decided to make grab bags with random selections from the overstock pile. We've got 18 boxes made up, each with an assortment of 25 records released or distributed by Ant-Zen. It's a wild selection of electronic and noise from the last decade, and from a variety of labels. All the records are new, although a few of them are a bit dusty because they've been around for a long time. We had more than 50 titles to choose from, so there's a lot of variety, even if you buy two grab bags. What exactly is included in this deal? Well, if we told you the names then it wouldn’t be a grab bag! All we’re saying is that there are 25 records -- mostly LPs and 12 inchers, but also some 10 inch and 7 inch records in each one. And there are only 18 of them, so it's a very limited offer! The records are shipped to you in a sturdy cardboard box with padding all the way 'round the inside. It counts as one item for shipping calculations, but it’s heavy, so for US customers we're mailing them to you via Media Mail, which can take up to two weeks. You'll get a tracking number, though. For our friends in Canada we'll charge $41.00 instead of a price based on the number of items you buy. Postage to Mexico will be $54.00. To Europe it'll be $62.00 and to Japan the cost will be $71.00

ARTIST: BAUMANN, FRANZISKA
TITLE: Eternal Ice Melts - Voice Sphere Remixes
LABEL: SOLEILMOON RECORDINGS |

|
| DESCRIPTION: In the fall of 2003 Franziska Baumann performed at the Matrix Festival of contemporary music, in Leipzig, Germany. Her manipulated recordings of melting glacier ice wowed the audience, but just as memorable were the 125 copies of a remix CD distributed at the event. Noted artists Lull, Seetyca and Clemmens Presser were drafted to compose pieces based on her works. For Mick Harris (Lull) fans, finding a copy of this CD has been their holy grail. On October 16 Soleilmoon puts an end to their frustration, and does it in typical over-the-top Soleilmoon fashion, with a hand numbered limited edition presented in a silkscreened vellum slip cover. Fortunately, the quantity is more reasonable this time: 500 copies will be made. And finally, just for this new edition, Kurt Gluck (Submerged) has contributed a heart pounding new drum’n’bass track.
Lull is the name of the dark ambient side project of Mick Harris, former drummer for Napalm Death and current leader of challenging industrial music band Scorn. German artist Seetyca is a prolific artist who records his bleak, isolationist soundscapes music for many labels, including darkwinter.com. Clemens Presser, another German artist, has contributed to several compilations and is now working on his first solo album. Kurt Gluck runs the Ohm Resistance label and is a famous drum’n’bass DJ. He has collaborated with Bill Laswell and John Zorn, and regularly moves back and forth between the dance and experimental music scenes.
Franziska Baumann is fascinated by the glacier as a listening space. She has been examining the forms of sound in and upon the glacier, inspired by the enormous tide of ice and its multilayered temporal and spatial dimensions, and she sets her own voice in a dialogue with its icy spaces
Using stereo, zoom and contact microphones, Franziska Baumann senses the aliveness and dynamics of ice and the poetry of the sounds that live in glacial crevasses and grottos. The sounds of the glacier (creaks, drips, rumbles, shuffles etc.) were recorded at different times on and within. Her voice touches the icy crevasse walls in their various states, from karstic to icy smoothness.
Warmth and cold produce different sound pictures. In collaboration with glaciologists from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and the Swiss Computing Center in Zurich, she has transformed seismographic recordings of glacial movements into sound paintings. A portrait of this work was broadcasted on Swiss television in December 2001. |
