"The Autonomous Music Project" by Rod Modell, is a soothing, gentle, 3-D electro-acoustic exploration of huge outdoor spaces and naturally occurring acoustic phenomena, through the use of drones and dummy-head and parabolic microphones. Virtual reality on a CD. Always soft, and atmospheric, this recording is excellent for sleeping, relaxing, and escapism. Many strange and beautiful environments have been documented sonicly on this CD, mostly late at night, or in the twilight hours of morning. State of the art stereo-image enhancers were employed to provide a lush, enveloping "3-D sound". Cool sounds of water and air, combined with carefully selected drones and reverbs enhance the natural elements, but never overpower them. This is an organic, vivid, high-resolution experience.
Rod Modell became interested in experimenting with sound in the early 80's. Living in Port Huron Michigan, Rod was inflenced by a friend's band Hunting Lodge, and other purveyors of the late 70's "industrial school" . Sound experimentation began in the 80's with crude, home-made electronic noise makers. Since then, Modell has utilized extremely high-tech tools for carving out his sound, such as the Fairlight music computer, and Synclavier. Recently, Rod has forsaken hardware in the studio in preference for more "open-ended" software alternatives. Rod's work can also be found on Silent Records (under the name Waveform Transmission), Hypnos Recordings (a collaboration project called Sonic Continuum, with west coast psycho-acoustic guru, Michael Mantra), and on several compilations around the world. Rod has also issued low-fi, "underground" 12" vinyl pressings of minimal techno, under the name, Global Systems Silently Moving, and his atmospheric soundscapes have been featured on The Discovery Channel TV network. Rod also runs an audio mastering facility, called Cistern Sound, that specializes in electronic music postproduction.
Rod Modell is currently in the process of finishing a handful of collaboratons with various artists around the globe. A full length album with Jostein Dahl Gielsvik and Bjarte Andreassen (a.k.a. Circular, and Neural Network from Norway's Origo Sound label) is near completion, as is a beat-driven collaboration with Oddgeir Hvidsten of Motion Control (Beatservice Records - Norway). And a project with Bevan Smith (a.k.a. ASPEN) of New Zealand is also in it's final stages. After completing these projects Modell will re-dedicate his focus to solo projects that explore the hard-core "computer music" aesthetic.
'The Autonomous Music Project' comes in a full color cardstock sleeve, packed inside a multi-fold 6 inch by 8 inch textured paper cover, all sealed in a heavy-gauge plastic cover. It's limited to 1000 copies and will not be reprinted. Lunar is a creation of Amplexus (Italy).
