Andy Julia is known for his rich musical background, which began with black metal bands such as Nuit Noire, Mütiilation and Darvulia, before moving towards different horizons with Dernière Volonté and his own band, Soror Dolorosa. Yet it is his photographic work that led Timeless Editions to dedicate this retrospective to him.
In “Materia Prima”, Andy Julia unveils his world and his deeply personal vision of beauty, from the castle of Les Légions Noires to the most secluded rooms of the Palace of Versailles, from his collaborations with Parisian Gentleman to his photo sessions with Zombie Boy in the Paris catacombs, not to mention his captivating female figures whose hair evokes alchemical metals emerging from the crucible.
Nourished by painting, his photography draws heavily on the Symbolist aesthetic of the late nineteenth century. The influence of Fernand Khnopff regularly surfaces throughout the book in compositions imbued with mystery, melancholy, and a timeless sense of beauty.
Music remains ever-present throughout the volume. Among its pages appear artists and bands such as Perturbator, Heilung, Sylvaine, Dernière Volonté and many others. One of the recurring threads running through “Materia Prima” is also the presence of Neige of Alcest, a long-time companion whose path has crossed Andy Julia’s since the very beginning.
