Preface by Thierry Chancogne
This is the story of one of the most exhilarating adventures in popular graphic design: the logos of metal bands (Death, Black, Industrial Gothic, Speed, Thrash, Grindcore, Doom, etc.).
From Gothic typefaces rooted in medieval imagery and lapidary lettering inspired by ancient or runic epigraphy, to geometric sans-serifs with sharp angles evoking science fiction, or even illegible scripts composed of interlaced patterns, drips, fangs, thorns, and roots, this radicalism serves as the visual extension of metal. Whether the bands belong to the Death, Black, Industrial Gothic, Speed, Thrash, Grindcore, or Doom subgenres, their logos are intentionally confrontational, raw, and iconoclastic. Acting as seals of belonging and markers of authority, they do more than just identify who is playing; they declare who the music is for, and what it stands against.
This is the account of a remarkable journey into vernacular “branding.” The focus here is not on a critical or musical analysis; after all, every band has its own unique way of screaming. Instead, this is a survey and classification based on style, on the specific ways these artists burn, destroy, ransack, melt, distort, fuse, and explode their instruments, their lettering, their vocal cords, and their graphic conventions. It explores the fascinating parallel between sound and aesthetics, and between aesthetics and sound.
