After Psychonavigation and Air, Infinite Fog continues its series of five-CD editions devoted to Pete Namlook. The third box collects the complete Silence series, one of the key early projects on FAX +49-69/450464.

Silence began in Frankfurt in the early 1990s. Dr. Atmo was hosting ambient nights at the XS club, drawing full houses with sets made for the chill-out room rather than the dance floor. Pete Namlook came to listen, the two became friends, and before long they were working together in Namlook’s studio.

Released in December 1992, the first Silence album was the first full-length ambient release on Namlook’s newly founded FAX label. Across more than seventy-four minutes, Omid / Hope, Garden Of Dreams, Santur and Trip brought together slow symphonic passages, analogue electronics, piano, voices and Middle Eastern elements. The album soon became an early FAX classic.

“Silence II” went deeper and darker. Slow acoustic piano, heavy drones and whispered voices turned Life / Death, Faith and What Is Time? into music of introspection, ritual and healing. For this edition, Heaven appears in its complete twenty-two-minute original version rather than the shortened AW cut used on the standard CD.

After the first two albums, Dr. Atmo and Pete Namlook went their separate ways, but Namlook continued Silence as a solo project. “Silence III”, released in 1998, moved through desert imagery and Persian-influenced textures. “Silence IV” followed in 1999, ranging from symphonic strings and slow Eastern rhythms to deep environmental sound. “Silence V” completed the series in 2001 with soprano vocals, warm bass, flute and guitar.

Although the sound changed from one record to the next, Silence never became a fixed formula. Each album approached ambient music from a different angle while keeping the slow pace and spacious character of the original.

“The Silent Years (Retrospective)” now brings the complete series together for the first time as a 5CD box set: more than five and a half hours of music recorded between 1992 and 2001.

“The Silent Years” continues the work begun with Infinite Fog’s Psychonavigation and Air box sets.
