“The Pulse of Atoms” should come with a warning: PLAY LOUD OR NOT AT ALL.

It’s a note that dark ambient/industrial titan Lustmord nearly added to the liner notes of his new collaboration with drum legend Dave Lombardo. On their first collaboration, they plumb the depths of original industrial and dark ambient, mapping out something larger than just music.

Dave Lombardo may be unfamiliar to followers of Soleilmoon, but his reputation as a drum innovator and musical bellwether is unsurpassed. Whether it was his decades-long tenure with thrash metal titans Slayer, his four-album stint with influential experimentalists Fantömas, or his work with prestigious composer/saxophonist John Zorn, Lombardo’s passion for — and spiritual connection to — sound transcends all boundaries.

Lustmord is well known here, but for anyone not familiar with his music, he’s recognized as an early innovator in dark ambient music. He was initially associated with the industrial scene in the early ’80s as a member of SPK before establishing his signature sound with releases like 1986’s “Paradise Disowned” (Side Effects) and 1990’s “Heresy” (Soleilmoon). Beyond his solo work, Lustmord has built an extensive career as a collaborator and film/game composer, working with bands such as Melvins, Tool, Nurse With Wound, and Wes Borland, and he has contributed to over forty motion pictures, including First Reformed, The Crow, and Underworld.
