With “Once Upon A Time” Sol Invictus step into an alternate universe of Dark Folk, 1970s Prog Rock and Psychedelia. On this, his 18th album with the band, Tony Wakeford is accompanied by old cohorts Caroline Jago, Lesley Malone, Éilish McCracken and Renée Rosen, and receives support of Agalloch members Don Anderson (lead guitar) and Jason Walton (mix) and Anton Shelupanov (guest vocals and blues harp).
Tony Wakeford skillfully invokes the group’s rich history with his sharp-tongued lyrics. At the same time he incorporates new influences to add a new dimension to his band’s cosmos. Sol Invictus still have something to say even nowadays, both in music and content, and “Once Upon A Time” shows that in an impressive manner.
